Tuina (pronounced 'twee-nah') is a completely different type of massage to anything experienced. Tuina is a medical method of using the arms, hands and fingers (also uses elbows and knees on adults!) as tools for treating diseases and illnesses, especially common childhood illnesses. Tuina is an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which also encompasses acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition and exercise to treat the whole body, mind and spirit
In China, Tuina as part of baby's daily routine, is used to protect health and build up body immunity, so that disease can be stopped in it's beginning acting as a preventative medical measure, without any side effects. Tuina can sometimes be mistaken for acupressure
Tuina is one of the earliest medical forms of mankind and can be seen in the medical history of every old nation all over the world. The behaviour of our forefathers was to rub, press, kneed, pound or stamp on themselves or their fellows bodies in order to keep out cold, get rid of discomfort and treat various injuries, continuously developing their practical experiences, which gradually became what is now known as a natural therapy. At around 500AD the first Tuina specialists appeared in China and was so successful it spread around the globe, interacting with other native medical beliefs and customs. Tuina is the basis upon which many modern complementary therapies are based, such as Shiatsu, Acupressure, Baby Massage (Western), Deep Tissue Massage, Sports Massage, Lymphatic Draining, Cranial Osteopathy to name but a few. Chiropractic and Physiotherapy manipulations are also founded on Tuina techniques
Today in China, every hospital has a Tuina department. Adult patients queue with a huge range of symptoms from prolapsed discs, to frozen shoulder and sciatica, to high blood pressure, migraines, knee problems, menstrual problems, fatigue or insomnia to name a few. Even more symptoms are treated in the paediatric (infantile) Tuina clinic - such as diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, enuresis, convulsions, common cold, asthma, fever, eczema, whooping cough, chicken pox, etc. Even infantile short-sightedness is treated through Tuina massage! Note : In China, there is no such disease as Colic. Depending on the frequency and consistency of 'colic' outbursts, the Chinese medical system would diagnose the different sources of the problem and treat the root cause(s). It is interesting to note that many who claim to be able to eliminate colic or alleviate colic can do only just that - alleviate the symptoms of colic - and not address the root cause of the problem because their understanding is limited to and based only on western research, which has yet to provide a scientific explanation for the cause(s) of colic
Tuina has no adverse side effects, although because it can be a powerful treatment in terms of re-adjusting the functions of the body, some patients may see an increase in frequency of visits to the bathroom (or nappy changes), or may feel the build up and release of pressure throughout the body or may feel slightly sedated immediately after the treatment
There is only an upper age limit of 5 years for Baby Tuina. After age 5 years the adult Tuina massage routine is adapted for use
